What is success

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself this question?

What are you actually trying to achieve in life?

Different perspectives for ideas on success

For most of my life I have been trying to get through to the end of the day sane. (I get it).

I had 8 children – 4 boys and 4 girls and 4 stepsons that I have raised while working part-time for most of my life either in my own business or supporting my husband’s work.

If I got to the end of the day and the kids had been fed, and the house not destroyed, and I hadn’t yelled too much it was a successful day.

When my daughter was struggling recently with her very active 5-year-old and feeling like she wasn’t coping I said this to her.  Is he alive?  Is he fed?  Does he still love you?  Then it is a successful day.  She thought it was a very low bar.  I disagree, some days that was success.

But now we finally have time to think about what we want the second half of our life to look like.

What does success look like to you now?

It probably includes money.  It probably always did, under the weight of the workload, but now we have time to concentrate on more than the essential money to live each week.

  • What are your money goals?
  • What are your life goals?
  • What are your personal goals?

Write them all down and make sure they really are your goals, and not something that you have thought others would approve of.

Now is the time of life that we can have what WE want.

My dream life, turned out to be not quite “the dream”

I sold the big family home with a swimming pool and big yard.  It was a great home and was wonderful to raise teenage children but as a home for a single person,

Yuck.  I felt like I was rattling around.  It felt so lonely.

I have always dreamed of living by the beach, so I rented right next a beautiful beach on the Sunshine Coast.  A real dream location.  Lulled to sleep at night by the sound of the ocean.

Taking my dog for a walk for kilometres of people-free beach.  It was the dream.   But my children were too busy to visit, and I was spending time each week driving to Brisbane to visit them.  That didn’t fit my dream.

I bought a townhouse near the kids and grandkids, that is brand new and just the right size.  It has a 25 m swimming pool as part of the complex, but I don’t have to look after it.  Plenty of area of soccer games and I don’t have to mow it.  This is what I need now.

Goals change.  We change.  Dreams change.

Make sure that where you are heading now is where you want to go.

Many online businesswomen talk about $5,000 or $10,000 per month as their income goals.

But have you thought about why you want the money?

Because I am certain I can say that no one wants the money just to put in their safe and leave it there!!  We are not Scrooge McDuck just wanting money.

We want money for what it can do.

Maybe you want to buy a house or a better house.  Is it for travel?  Or do you want to put it into your super fund so that you can stop working and enjoy your grandchildren and hobbies without wondering if you have enough money?

One of the key things to do in the pre-retirement years is to work out exactly how much money you want.

Write out all the things you want to do.  The places you want to travel to, the things you want to buy.

Cost it out and write dollar figures beside each thing.

Now how much do you have?  Super, investments, assets.   How much passive income do you have?  And how much debt do you have – car loan, house loan, credit cards etc.  Write up what is called an asset and liability chart.

I know that it can be scary, but unknowns are worse.   You cannot set a plan until you know where you stand now.

Now with all those numbers in front of you, how are you feeling?

If you are feeling like it is all hopeless and you are going to struggle to eat in retirement, at least you know.

Fear means it’s time for some tapping

If it is bringing up fear or worry, then it is time to do some tapping.  Because no decision made out of fear is a good decision.

And now is the time to do something about it.

How much money would make this picture look better?

Once you understand what has to happen and tune the mindset into that goal it is amazing how quickly it can happen.

We did it in 10 years and that was through the global financial crisis that nearly had us bankrupt.  But the focus was clear.  The goal was clear and once we knew what had to happen it was as simple as making it happen.

I want this for you.

Get clear on what you want to happen, the vehicle you are going to use to make it happen and getting the mindset ready to make it happen.
