How Tapping Can Help You With The Why’s

woman-whyI love (EFT) Tapping.  I love it because for 10 years as a personal trainer, and for many years before that as a Naturopath and as a counselor, I was trying to help people with their health and well being.  I loved it and was very successful, but there was always the issue that people really knew what they should be doing, it was the WHY they were not doing what they knew, that frustrated me.

How many people know that if you eat a bar of chocolate a night you will probably put on weight, and it is not really good for your health either.  Or how many people know that exercise is good for them, but….. it is too hard, it is too cold, it is too hot, you get sweaty and sore.  So many excuses, but it really is very good for you.

Then I came across EFT and it helps with the WHY.  WHY people eat chocolate when they say they want to lose weight.  WHY people don’t exercise no matter how much they want to improve their fitness.  WHY people keep yelling at their husband even when they know that it will not solve the problem.  WHY people spend money on their credit card, even when they are struggling to pay down the debt.

We all have a conscious brain that learns and knows what to do.  We really want to do what it says, but we so often don’t.  That is because our conscious brain is only about 10% of what is happening in our brain.  An unconscious brain is in control of things like our heart beat, our breathing and our hormones.  Thank goodness it gets on with the job no matter what we do, and it generally does a very good job.

The other 50% is our subconscious brain.  This is the part of us that stores long term memory, our feelings and emotions, or habits and our addictions.  It is really the one in control.  We just think and hope we are in control, but as most of us have found out we do things when we don’t mean to, and don’t do things we actually planned to do.

How do we find out what the subconscious mind thinks?

This is an important question.  We need to find out what our thoughts are before we can start eliminating them.  Many of our subconscious programs were programmed in childhood. So we learnt to brush our teeth and now we can’t go to bed with dirty teeth.  There is a logical long term reason why we brush our teeth – we do not want cavities and eventually false teeth.  But there are lots of things we do not want in the distant future, like being overweight or living on the pension, but we do not necessarily do what we need to do, like we do, brushing our teeth.

The difference is habit.  We were taught very early, to brush our teeth before we go to bed – so we do – out of habit.  Not really thinking about the future consequences.

For most of us we did not get taught the program of daily exercise, or saving money.  These are ideas that were added later, for many of us much later.  They are not part of our habits. Our habits are to spend everything that we earn.  To watch TV, and to enjoy treats while we do.  To reward ourselves with presents and junk food.  These are our habits.

So when you decide you want to go on a diet, save some money or go and exercise you are using your conscious brain.  You can think up all the good reasons why you need to do these new activities, you can write them down, you can tell others on Facebook, but the one place you need to check in with, is your subconscious brain.  If it laughs at you, you have a problem.

This is where the tapping comes in . We now have a way to reprogram the subconscious brain and welcome it to the party.
